Infant Sam Abu Heikal: Seven Months of Life Ended by Israeli Gunfire in Hebron

HEBRON (JNA Press) – Infant Sam Abu Heikal had not yet reached his seventh month when the vehicle carrying his family became the scene of a tragedy that will remain etched in Palestinian memory for years to come. A child who knew nothing of the world beyond the warmth of his mother’s embrace and the familiar features of his father lost his life before uttering his first words or taking his first steps.

The case returned to public attention after the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem published video footage that it said documented the moment Israeli soldiers opened fire on the vehicle carrying the family in the city of Hebron days earlier, an incident that resulted in Sam’s death.

As calls continue for an investigation and accountability, the footage has once again highlighted the heavy human cost borne by Palestinian civilians, particularly children, amid the ongoing violence in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In those moments, Sam was not part of any confrontation or political event. He was simply a seven-month-old child sitting in his family’s vehicle, carrying a future he would never have the chance to live. Yet the gunfire brought his story to an end before it had truly begun.

Since then, the infant’s name has become a symbol of the suffering endured by Palestinian families who suddenly find themselves facing an irreplaceable loss. Behind every report of a child killed lies a mother holding on to tiny clothes that will never be worn again, a father confronting an emptiness that cannot be filled, and an entire family left to live with memories of a life cut tragically short.
